Meet Dr. DeWar
Dr. DeWar served in the United States Army as an Optometrist after completing his degree in 1971. Stationed first at Fort Sam Houston, TX and then Fort Dix, NJ, he then moved to Orleans, Indiana as a civilian and army reservist. In 1977 the Ellettsville practice became home.
After retiring from the military, Lieutenant Colonel DeWar had plenty of time to be Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 119 for 10 years. He retired as Scoutmaster in March of 2008 and has comfortably taken his place as Troop Committee Chairman. He is an active member and committee worker of Ellettsville First United Methodist Church. He is also a member of the Masonic Lodge. As for the practice itself, Hoosier Family Eyecare has sponsored little league teams, school programs and sports, public servicemen, and much more.
He has received many awards for these activities:
- Flame and Cross Award from the Methodist Church for Scout Council Scoutmaster’s Award of Merit
- Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award
- The Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds
Professionally, Dr. DeWar can be seen donating time for local school vision screenings in the fall. Dr. DeWar works with Edgewood High School’s mentoring program by allowing students to shadow him in order to learn something about the Optometry profession. He has had I.U. Optometric students to visit and shadow him to further their education thus serving the larger area community. Dr. DeWar is the 2016 recipient of Ellettsville Greater Area Chamber of Commerce Award of Excellence. This award is given in recognition of service to his community.
Dr. DeWar and his wife, Valerie, have 3 sons, 1 daughter, and 4 grandchildren. They enjoy traveling, playing golf and spending time with their family.

Meet David H. Owen!
David is our optician and dispensary supervisor. He has been in the Optical business since 1984, as an Optician, Tech and Lens Lab Inspector. He feels that the whole eyecare process should be fun, uplifting, and educational. Your spectacle selection will be time well spent giving you both quality and fashion for your investment. He enjoys spending time at the Owen homestead where they raise Sheep, Geese, Ducks, and Chickens. In his spare time he has roles including Training coordinator, Senior advisor and Member representative for the Putnam County Community Response Team.

Our practice has not merged with any other practice or business. We remain a single doctor, private optometry practice in Ellettsville that is in way a part of corporate America. We are also the only optometry office that is technically in Ellettsville as well. We still have the same standards we have always had, and we will continue to have. We always take new patients and will continue to service our established ones.
